Green Sapphire, Green Sapphires

Few gems can compare to a green sapphire. Throughout history, sapphire has been noted as a regal gem. Kings and queens have worn them, not only for decoration but also as a talisman offering a powerful defense against harm.

In Europe during the twelfth century, the Bishop of Rennes, France lavished praise on the sapphire for important uses such as ecclesiastical rings. It has been said that nature endowed it with so great a power that it might be called sacred and the gem of gems.

In 1495, Bartolomaes Anglicus credited the sapphire as being an antidote against poison. The gem also was believed endowed with the power to influence spirits.

Sir Richard Burton, the famous explorer and translator of the book, 1001Arabian Nights, possessed a large sapphire which he carried with him on many of his travels. He often called it his talisman, for wherever he went, it assured him of good horses and prompt attention. In the Orient, most believed that such a stone brought good fortune just by gazing upon it. In fact, the stone was so revered that, if Burton did not receive good service, he would refuse to show his sapphire.

Green sapphire is a gemstone variety of corundum. Any color of corundum except red is called sapphire and there are many sapphire colors. The name "sapphire" alone refers to blue sapphire. All other colors have the color name added to the stone, i.e. "green sapphire." Sapphire's sister stone, ruby, is the red variety of corundum.

Green sapphire makes an excellent choice for jewelry, because of its durability. The finest green sapphires come from Sri Lanka.
