Dahl Jewelers, Woodbridge, VA

Aquamarine is Latin for "sea water" and, in ancient days, this gem was treasured for its sea-green color.

Today's buyers, however, prefer their aquamarines to be a clear, intense blue. After emerald, aquamarine is the most sought after gem in the beryl family.

The history of the aquamarine unquestionably goes back a long way. It most certainly was one of the gems in the gold breastplate of the biblical Aaron. Pliny the Elder also wrote of aquamarine as did William Langley in his "Vision of William" which was written about 1377 and is one of the earliest examples known of English literature.

In those days, gems were credited with magical powers and aquamarine was believed to exert a soothing effect upon the wearer.

Around 1900, gemologists discovered how to intensity the blue in aquamarine; and, since then, that color has replaced green almost entirely. Now, aquamarine is more popular than ever and large, good quality aquamarines are prizes worthy of the most discriminating collector.
